In the next 50 years, 20-50% of current plant species in botanic gardens and urban landscapes will likely confront temperatures those species have never experienced before.

About the Climate Change Alliance of Botanic Gardens

In December 2018, the inaugural botanic gardens Climate Change Summit was held at Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne.

At this summit, representatives from 13 international botanic gardens and botanic organisations agreed to form the Climate Change Alliance of Botanic Gardens and made the following declaration:

Climate Change is happening now. As a consequence, the issues our world faces are unprecedented and borderless. The world’s botanic gardens are custodians of critically needed scientific and horticultural knowledge, and their landscapes a source of inspiration, learning and a place for positive social change.

The Climate Change Alliance of Botanic Gardens will be the voice of committed botanic gardens from around the globe. Together Alliance members will address the impacts of climate change on plants and landscapes and in turn protect people and this planet. Through the Alliance, botanic gardens and like-minded organisations across the globe are uniting to safeguard the planet through resilient landscapes.

We, the gardeners of the world, say the time for action is NOW.
